Hand Crank Winch
A Portable electric winch is a great option for people who need to move their boats or other heavy equipment. There are many different types of these machines, including manual, portable, hand crank, boat, mini and heavy duty. Winches are used on a variety of applications that need to move or haul heavy objects like a trailer winch
A winch is a device that is used to haul heavy objects up or down. The machine consists of a power source, such as human power, and rope called the cable which are connected with a series of gears, with one end attached to the object being moved and the other end secured at some stable point on land.
A
hand winch comes in multiple weight capacities so it is important to consider how much weight you are expecting to pull, other things to consider is if you need a brake installed on the machine, this is helpful when letting go of a load the brake automatically engages to stop the load from moving.
How does a winch work?
It is a mechanical device that has several different components, each with their own particular function. The most basic parts of the machine are:
- Cable - Usually made from steel, stainless or synthetic material and wrapped around either an interior drum to prevent entanglement, or externally fastened to another object for pulling into position.
- Drum - An exterior spool within the winch which allows it's circular shape (the "drum") to turn in one direction permitting winding process; while at the same time rotating opposite direction allowing unwinding process.
- Electric Motor - The motor turns the drum which allows the cable to begin wrapping around it.
- Worm Gear - The gear train takes power from the motor, converting this into pulling power which gives a winch its ability to tow heavy objects such as cars or boats with ease.
A hand crank winch can be either self-powered or powered by an electric source such as AC or DC. A manual tool is operated using a hand crank, while electric and hydraulic power sources are often used in larger applications. They are also incorporated into many other types of tools like
jib cranes and
material lifts.
Prices of heavy duty winches vary but a good starting priced of a is about $65 as you add weight capacity the pricing of a machine will increase. The same goes for an electric version, our Dutton Lainson models start at around $400 and can go as high as $800 depending upon the amount of capacity needed.
